Borgo Pass in Romania claimed fame in the opening chapter of Bram Stoker's Dracula which is an off beaten track through the Carpathian Mountain range located in the northern side of Transylvania where the peaks tower at a staggering 3840 feet.
This valley is truly one of the most beautiful and natural mountain ranges with its traditional picturesque villages which are situated in the valleys and along the hillsides and still today one can embrace the tapestry of days gone by from depicted handcrafts and folklore.
This beautiful country has been described in the diaries of the fictional Mina Harker where beauties of all descriptions depicted and goes onto to describe the inhabitants as strong and brave yet simple with good wholesome qualities. Bram Stoker's inspirations went far and beyond from the birth town to the Order of the Dragon and onto the ceremonial uniform or the Order which comprised of a black cloak worn over a red accouterment which enhanced the look of Count Dracula.
Did Bram Stocker's lose himself or did he allow his imagination to go beyond the realms that his story turned into a myth. During the time he was writing his book a genuine epidemic of vampirism broke out in eastern Europe and this was towards the seventeenth century which continued throughout the eighteenth century.
The number of vampires grew dramatically with emphasis on the Balkans and then spread to Italy, Germany, England, France and Spain. Stories were told about the un-dead from travelers which basically kept the vampire interest alive.
No Bram Stocker's had not lost his mind as he novel was based on tales that come from the east and readers at that time were convinced that the novel had been inspired by true facts and that the bases of the story was slightly romanticized. Bram Stocker's Dracula is over a hundred years old and still very much alive!
