Ask any kid on whether or not they like wearing a school uniform and I can guarantee you will receive a resounding "no" as an answer. School uniforms have always been pretty standard for private school but more public schools are also adopting the use of them.
School uniforms aren't so bad though. They actually offer quite a few advantages. As a mother, I find that it's actually a time saver for getting ready in the mornings because it eliminates the excuses of "I have nothing to wear" as your indecisive 12 year old shoots you dirty looks while still standing in her pajamas when she is suppose to leave the house in 5 minutes. It also prevents arguments because you do need to have your child change their outfit at your disapproval. The uniform sets the standard and pace for every morning dressing ritual.
You can actually save money on clothing. You only need to buy enough uniforms to get you through the school week which saves on wear and tear on their more trendy clothing that they can wear on the weekend. If you are buying the jumper style dresses, you can actually get twice as much use out of them by buying them just a bit oversized so that they can last through the year. You can also pair up some leggings with them during the winter for added warmth and in the spring they can wear the jumper without leggings to keep cool. For boys, its best to purchase pants that have reinforced knees such as specific school uniform pants made by Dickies.
You can also get through an entire school year on school uniform shirts if you buy them slightly larger than their current size. If you have dark colored uniform pants, jumpers or skirts, you can liven up the color a bit as they fade by using a clothing dye that is the same color. Rite dyes allow you to do this very quickly and Rite Dye is available at any craft store.
The best benefit for a school uniform is that there is no prejudice against a child for how they are dressed. Kids can be cruel and they often judge other kids by their fashion sense. Not every child can afford designer label clothing and if all the kids are dressed the same, this need to tease is reduced.
