Variety is the spice of life: try something new in the classroom
Janine Barclay

A change is as good as a rest - wise words worth heeding for those who find themselves in a rut but who can't take any time out from their everyday duties and responsibilities.

Indeed, doing the same things day in, day out can get tedious which is why it's always good to try new things - variety, as they say, is the spice of life. This is particularly relevant for teachers who not only have their own mental welfare to worry about, but a classroom full of young minds that must be engaged and stimulated at all times.

With that in mind, it's worth considering ditching the textbooks and looking for adventure; the digital revolution is well underway, so it's important not to be left behind the rest of society.

School should be a natural extension to a child's home which, let's face it, is probably a melting pot of computers, smart phones, mp3 players, plasma televisions and a whole host of other delightful digital devices.

That isn't to say teachers should pressurise the school head into parting with precious funds on all the latest new-fangled gadgets, but there are a plethora of affordable contraptions that can bring any classroom to life.

Interactive whiteboards (IWBs), for example, are fantastic tools that can bring the French Revolution or Second World War to life in the classroom. Teachers can tap into the array of features facilitated by the magical multimedia device, and it not only can play video and audio but they can engage youngsters with collaborative question and answers sessions too.

To help, each pupil has a personal learner response system (LRS) which are handsets that enable the class to submit responses to set questions, which can then be displayed on the IWB at the front of the class

Furthermore, thanks to the wonders of the World Wide Web, teachers can access a wide range of interactive whiteboard activities online, which complement any lesson plan perfectly.

The benefit of this is two-fold. Not only can teachers access a vast array of interactive educational activities, but because they come fully tried and tested from a teacher somewhere else in the world, then the chances are they're already a proven success.

It's always good to try something new in all walks of life, and by tapping into the wonders of modern technology, teachers across all subjects and disciplines can breathe new life into their classroom. A change most certainly is as good as a rest when it comes to education.
