Before addressing the question, what are vaginal yeast infections? Let us first begin by defining yeast. This substance, otherwise known as Candida, is a fungus. When it rises above the normal levels within the area of the vagina, the condition known as vaginitis develops. Vaginitis is extremely uncomfortable and a source of embarrassment for many women. But it is nothing to be embarrassed about; instead it is best to be informed on its symptoms and treatment.
When the vagina becomes irritated it is important to keep the area as clean as possible. Any added moisture to the area should be avoided. Bedding should be constantly changed and clean undergarments should be worn at all times. Women that frequently get vaginitis, should seek medical help.
This condition is the result of new yeast entering the vaginal area and out growing the normal yeast levels that naturally occur. Some naturalist believe the condition should be left untreated allowing the body to cure itself but this is a marginal point of view. It is best to treat and heal the condition before it worsens.
This condition is not to be confused with sexually transmitted disease. Candida is a natural part of the female reproductive process. Women that have never had sex will still experience vaginitis. But is it possible for a woman to pass the infection on to a man resulting in an irritation on the skin of his penis.
The symptoms of vaginitis include itchiness, soreness and burning sensations. There is a thick, odorless discharge that resembles cottage cheese. The condition can last anywhere from two to seven days, anything longer may need medical attention. Vaginitis commonly occurs just before a menstrual cycle.
Vaginitis can be treated with over the counter anti-fungal treatments that are applied directly on the infected area. For severe cases, a prescription of antibiotics is necessary from a doctor. If a woman experiences several episodes, then she may have a serious medical condition that requires immediate attention. Most doctors prefer to treat these infections with vaginal suppositories rather than oral anti-fungal medications. Oral medications may cause side effects such as headaches, nausea, and abdominal pain.
Frequent yeast infections are not normal and should be analyzed and treated by a doctor. If this is a first occurrence, it is important to see your doctor to make sure this is in fact vaginitis. Women sometimes think they have vaginitis based on the symptoms, but it may be a far more serious condition. In other cases, it may be a less serious condition. For instance, irritation in the vaginal area might be the result of a chemical or allergic reaction. It is always best to make sure and seek medical advice at the first sign of irritation.
